Opening of the Project Implementation Unit building at the Ministry
of General Education and Instruction in Juba
Today, 04 February 2026, the Ministry of General
Education and Instruction (MoGEI) officially inaugurated the Project
Implementation Unit (PIU) building for the project Building Skills
for Human Capital Development in South Sudan. The ceremony marked an
important milestone in strengthening education systems and improving human
capital development in the country.
The Minister of General Education and Instruction presided
over the event and emphasized the importance of achieving the project’s
objectives, noting that the PIU will play a critical role in effective
coordination, implementation, and delivery of project results.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Minister
of Finance and Planning, Hon. Barnaba Baak Chol, who highlighted the
central role of education in nation-building and sustainable economic
development. He reiterated the government’s commitment to investing in
education as a foundation for peace, stability, and growth.
The Coordinator of the National Education Coalition (NEC)
called on the government to increase funding for education services,
particularly emphasizing the timely payment of teachers’ salaries as a key
factor in improving the quality of education across South Sudan.
Since 2023, the President of the Republic of South
Sudan has declared education free and compulsory,
reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring access to education for all
children.
Representing the World Bank, Mr. Tafuma
underscored the Bank’s crucial role in financing the project. He clarified that
the newly inaugurated building belongs to the Ministry of General Education and
Instruction and urged PIU staff to focus on results and impact, noting that the
project is scheduled to conclude in 2028.
The inauguration of the PIU building symbolizes a renewed commitment by the
government and its partners to strengthen institutional capacity to build a
skilled workforce and deliver quality education for the future of South Sudan.
